Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Albany State University released a four-minute recorded statement from Interim President Dr. Lawrence Drake II.

In the statement, he said there was no active threat on campus.

ASU students told WALB that they do have safety concerns. And although Dr. Drake is addressing that, we do have other questions:

  • If suspects have been identified or if there have been any arrests.
  • It’s also unclear what security changes ASU will make, if any, moving forward.

“I was coming up this hill behind you when I heard the shots rang out and I immediately sheltered into my dormitory,” said Isaiah Jones, ASU student.

Students describe the shocking moment ASU’s Homecoming turned deadly.

Five females ages 13, 16, 17, and 20 were among the victims shot. Another 19-year-old was injured while fleeing the scene.

Dougherty County Schools released a statement saying:

Among those injured during this weekend’s tragic shooting were several DCSS students.

Officials say they’re hopeful those students will make a full recovery. The community is also mourning the loss of 19-year-old De’Marion Tashawn Daniels. He was not an ASU student.

“It’s sad that it happened and like it’s just tragic,” said Jazmine Walker, ASU student-athlete.

Many ASU alumnae and students are asking the same questions: What security measures were in place the night of the shooting?

WALB found ASU’s security protocols for this year’s Homecoming. Among the protocols listed were gate closures after 10 p.m., the requirement of Ram ID cards, and clear bag requirements.

Students say that they haven’t seen any security changes on campus since the shooting happened.

“I think we need to up security a little bit more. I know it is an open campus but a lot of times you have students concerned for their safety because you have just anybody walking on campus sometimes,” said Jones.

Other students are still at a loss for words and are sending prayers to everyone impacted.

“There’s like nothing else more that we can besides pray and give it to God,” said Walker.

ASU officials say now more than ever it’s important for students who may know something to say something.

Local law enforcement also says doing so could lead them to the answers they need to make an arrest. Anyone can call Albany State University Police at (229) 430-4711.
