Description

CAIRO, Ga. (WCTV) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating after Cairo City Manager Booker Gainor said he was shot at.

In a phone call with WCTV Wednesday afternoon, GCSO Chief Deputy Kent Harvey said that deputies responded to a 911 call at about 10 p.m. Tuesday. The sheriff’s office confirmed Thursday that authorities responded to the incident near Aldredge Road and Highway 188.

GBI reports Gainor was driving a UTV and pulled over on the side of the road to make a phone call when a sedan drove up behind him.

“Gainor reported that multiple shots were fired from the direction of the sedan. Gainor drove away on the UTV, escaping without any injuries to himself or damage to his UTV,” a GBI press release said.

Chief Deputy Harvey said on Wednesday that no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

There’s no indication as to whether or not this was or could have been politically motivated.

One concerned resident called the incident terrifying, she spoke out about concerns for safety in the community and transparency from law enforcement.

“Get a phone call to notify me of what happened, I find it a bit concerning, transparency is very important,” Sondra said.

Mayor Arlisha Williams addressed the incident in a social media post early Thursday morning, asking the community for patience as authorities conduct their investigation.

“Tuesday evening, our City Manager was involved in a serious incident that is currently being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

As this remains an active investigation, we will be limited in what information can be shared at this time. I ask for patience as the appropriate authorities conduct their work.

Let me be clear: acts of violence and intimidation are not condoned or tolerated within our community. Such behavior is contrary to the values that define Cairo and has no place in our city.

I want to emphasize that this incident does not reflect who we are as a community. Cairo is a city of faith, resilience, compassion, and respect for one another. While this event is deeply concerning, it does not define our people or the values we share.

Please join me in keeping City Manager Booker T. Gainor IV, his family, our community and all those affected in your thoughts and prayers. Let us continue to support one another, stand united, and move forward together as a community."
