ENIGMA, Ga. (WALB) — Residents say deteriorating road conditions are damaging their vehicles and costing them hundreds of dollars in repairs.

Homer Adams said he has paid for front-end alignments three times on his wife’s car because of potholes on his street. He provided receipts documenting the repairs.

“The time I’ve lived here, this road has been tore up from day one,” said Adams, who has lived in the area for nine years. “It’s been tore from right there in front of my house all the way down to the curve.”

Adams said the road conditions have only gotten worse over time. He said the street was partially damaged when he moved in, but deterioration has spread.

City plans resurfacing project

City officials said they are planning to resurface roads using TSPLOST funds. Seven roads are scheduled for resurfacing in the fall: Norris, Ferris Street, Harris Street, Edwards Road, Cleo Street and South Main Street. The project is budgeted at $1,108,000.

City officials said the Southern Georgia Regional Commission discussed the paving project at a council meeting in March. Officials said they also addressed the timeline at a May 4 council meeting.

Residents dispute complaint numbers

City officials said only two citizens have asked about road paving at City Hall.

Residents disputed that figure. Adams said there have been “complaints after complaints.”

Samuel Welch, who has lived in the area for four years, said the street conditions have gotten worse during that time.

“The roads behind me, they’re cracked,” Welch said. “They’re filled with quick-crete from, like, Home Depot or Lowe’s.”

Another resident said the roads need to be scraped and redone. The resident said the city painted over roads but did not make substantive repairs.

“These roads need to be scraped and redone,” the resident said. “It’s what they need to be done.”

Carl Smith said residents have tried to address concerns at city council meetings.

“If we go into city meeting, they go into private section where we can’t be attend,” Smith said. “All we want is them to do stuff right and legal and fix stuff around here.”
