QUITMAN, Ga. (WCTV) - Four teens are now facing criminal charges in connection with a fire that engulfed a historic building last month in Brooks County.
The Quitman community was shocked last month when the Historic North Walker Street School went up in flames. Now, Quitman Police are revealing that an investigation has led to four arrests and uncovered more details on the events of that night.
The incident unfolded just before 1 a.m. in the 400 block of North Walker Street, according to the Brooks County Fire Department. Video courtesy James BrownThe Georgia Fire Investigation Unit determined that there was no motive for the fire, the police department wrote Thursday in a Facebook post.
“During the investigation it was discovered there was no set motive only just teenagers trespassing and being careless,” the post said. “Investigators are still investigating because others are possibly involved.”
All four suspects are facing the following charges, per QPD:
- Second-degree arson
- Second-degree burglary
- Interference with government property
- Possession of tools to commit a crime
- Criminal trespassing

QPD wrote in the press release that the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice is now working on the case as well. The Quitman Fire Department, Brooks County Fire Department Remerton Fire Department and Lowndes County Fire Department were also involved in the aftermath of the fire, per QPD.
