SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - [UPDATE 1:07 p.m. 7/4/2025] After SPD reiterated that they would be charging the two juveniles yesterday evening, Mayor Van Johnson, responding to a comment on Facebook, said today:

No charges were dropped. It was a miscommunication by our folks. Trust, changes are coming.

The Oglethorpe Mall shooting is still under investigation at this time.

[UPDATE 2:14 p.m. 7/3/2025] Savannah Police Department has confirmed to WTOC that they are now not charging the two juveniles with any crime.

We are working to learn more and will provide updates when information becomes available.

[ORIGINAL STORY] The Savannah Police Department has confirmed to WTOC that two of the people who were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds last night after the Oglethorpe Mall shooting have been charged with possession of a firearm under the age of 18.

Chatham County District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones says her office stands ready to prosecute this case under the fullest extent of the law.

“Such a blatant disregard of lives and safety will absolutely not be tolerated. I, as your District Attorney, plan to hold those responsible and I plan to bring the full weight of the law to bear in handling this case.”

District Attorney Jones also called on not just law enforcement, but the community as a whole to be proactive in preventing situations like these in the future referencing several shootings over the last year, most notably on Congress Street and Ellis Square.
