GEORGIA (WALB) - Georgia’s primitive weapons deer season starts this weekend. Starting on October 11th hunters can use a range of primitive weapons for deer hunting.

According to Department of Natural resources (DNR), deer biologist Charlie Killmaster, This early hunting season also allows youth hunters to use a standard firearm during the hunt. A youth hunter is someone 16-years-old or younger.

“Primitive weapons/youth-only firearms season is a great time to take an extra doe to donate before the peak of the rut kicks in for most counties.”

Primitive weapons include

• Archery
• Air bows
• Muzzle loading shotguns (20 gauge and up)
• Muzzle loading firearms (.30 caliber and larger
• Air rifles

Killmaster also said this early start to hunting season is a perfect time for hunters to get an extra deer to donate to the Hunters for the Hungry Program.

In Georgia there are legal limits for harvesting deer. A hunter can only harvest 12 deer during the entire hunting season from October 11 to January 11th. No more than 10 deer may be antlerless and no more than 2 may be antlered.

Georgia’s Regular hunting season starts on October 18 ending on January 11th.
