The last inmate who remained on the run after he and nine others escaped from a jail in New Orleans nearly five months ago was captured on Wednesday, according to authorities.

Derrick Groves, 28, was taken into custody following "a brief standoff" with police at a home in Atlanta, Louisiana State Police announced on social media.

He was hiding in a crawl space,” Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair said. “It appears he was the only one in this house and he was hidden pretty well.”

Fair said law enforcement developed a lead on Groves’ whereabouts with help from Crimestoppers, which is an anonymous tip line.

Authorities previously said Groves, 28, and the other inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Jail on May 16 by crawling through a hole behind a toilet before scaling a barbed-wire fence. The words "To Easy LoL" were seen written on the cell wall.

Attorney General Liz Murrill said Groves is now facing charges for his role in the escape.

I will ensure that he is prosecuted to the full extent of the law," Murrill wrote on X, also praising authorities. "Excellent work by all our law enforcement partners who have been working so hard for this outcome the past few months. I especially want to thank my investigators with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) for their work in this case."

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry shared similar sentiments.

Thank you to our incredible law enforcement officials from the federal, state, and local level who worked tirelessly to put each of these men back where they belong: BEHIND BARS," Landry wrote on X.
You picked the wrong State," he added.

Groves, 28, had been convicted of murder and was facing a possible life sentence before the jailbreak, which is one of the largest in recent U.S. history.

Groves had the most violent criminal record of the escapees and authorities had offered a $50,000 reward for tips that lead to his recapture.
