CellphonesSchoolsBanStudentsTechnologyPoliciesDistractiveEducationThe movement to ban cellphones in public schools is gaining momentum across the country.
At least 11 states have passed laws or enacted policies that ban or restrict students' use of cellphones in schools or recommend that local school districts enact their own restrictive policies.
Erika Donalds, founder of OptimaEd, joined The National Desk to discuss.
“I strongly believe that any technology used in classrooms needs to be owned by the school or the district, managed by the school or the district, because it's not the technology, it's not the device itself that's the problem. It's the distractive applications that these students are getting on, the TikTok, the Snapchat,” Donalds said. “Because there's some amazing education technology that is in place right now in many school environments that are helping students to learn, helping them to advance. So, we need to be careful about demonizing cellphone use or device use at all. It really just needs to be used properly and ensure that the school or the district is providing that device, managing that device, and ensuring that it's only used for academic purposes.”
