TORONTO (TNND) — Canada's Liberty Party has elected former central banker Mark Carney to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau amid a trade war with the United States.
Carney, 59, won in a landslide with 85.9% of the vote.
“There is someone who is trying to weaken our economy,” Carney said. “Donald Trump, as we know, has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell and how we make a living. He’s attacking Canadian families, workers and businesses and we cannot let him succeed and we won’t.”
Carney said Canada will keep retaliatory tariffs in place until “the Americans show us respect.”
Trudeau announced his resignation as the Liberal Party leader in January but will remain prime minister until Carney is sworn in.
He has led the party since 2013 and the nation since 2015.
"I leave as leader of the Liberal Party with the same belief in hope and hard work as when I started, Trudeau wrote on X in reaction to Carney's victory. "Hope for this party and for this country, because of the millions of Canadians who prove every day that better is always possible."
On Friday, Trump threatened to put new tariffs on Canadian dairy and lumber products one day after he gave the country a one-month reprieve on 25% tariffs.
Trump announced Thursday a one-month pause on tariffs for goods from Mexico and Canada that are covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
Delaying the tariffs until April 2 also helps protect American car manufacturers and farmers, according to Trump.
