CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — A man who was allegedly trying to break into a church with a pickaxe was hit by a deputy vehicle to disarm him after he started threatening another deputy with his weapon, according to officials.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office said it all started Monday evening, when their deputies responded to Cross Point Church, where a man identified as Matthew Brady was reported trying to break into the church with a pickaxe.

"Several of the church members observed that Brady had the axe in his possession so they sheltered themselves inside the building," CCSO said.

The sheriff's office said one of their deputies tried to make contact with Brady, who ignored the deputy's commands and started walking toward a nearby 7-Eleven gas station.

"The deputy commanded Brady several times to drop the pickaxe and to get out of the roadway," CCSO said. "Brady failed to comply with the deputies’ orders."

As the incident continued, the sheriff's office said another deputy arriving to the scene say Brady in the road wielding the pickaxe as he threatened a deputy.

"In response to Brady’s threatening behavior, the deputy slowed his vehicle, struck Brady, disarming the pickaxe from his possession," CCSO said. "Deputies at the scene attempted to take Brady into custody."

Despite being hit with the vehicle, the sheriff's office says Brady still continued tio resist arrest, but he was eventually taken into custody.

After he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries he was released back into officials' custody Tuesday morning. Now he is charged with the following:

  • Disorderly conduct
  • Assault on law enforcement without battery
  • Obstruction of justice x2

The case is still under investigation.
