CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — A man who was allegedly trying to break into a church with a pickaxe was hit by a deputy vehicle to disarm him after he started threatening another deputy with his weapon, according to officials.
The Campbell County Sheriff's Office said it all started Monday evening, when their deputies responded to Cross Point Church, where a man identified as Matthew Brady was reported trying to break into the church with a pickaxe.
"Several of the church members observed that Brady had the axe in his possession so they sheltered themselves inside the building," CCSO said.
The sheriff's office said one of their deputies tried to make contact with Brady, who ignored the deputy's commands and started walking toward a nearby 7-Eleven gas station.
