WASHINGTON (TNND) — As the United States works to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine as the first concrete step toward ending Russia's war, the Kremlin has applied new pressure on the White House to pull support for its ally.

During a lengthy phone call between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, Putin agreed to a 30-day ceasefire on Ukrainian energy infrastructure targets. The two leaders also agreed to begin negotiations "immediately" in the Middle East.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the ceasefire on energy targets would be "positive." He also accused Putin of running out the clock to evade a long-term agreement.

Readouts of the call from the White House and Kremlin had some key differences. One of them could be the demise of peace talks if Russia doesn't budge:

It was emphasized that the key condition for preventing the escalation of the conflict and working towards its resolution through political and diplomatic means should be the complete cessation of foreign military aid and the provision of intelligence information to Kyiv," an English translation of the Kremlin's readout said.

This is untenable for European allies. Before Trump and Putin's call, the Kremlin's conditions for the full ceasefire agreement Ukraine has agreed to included Ukraine shrinking the size of its military and Russia retaining control of Ukrainian territory it's seized over the past decade.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, “The ‘yes, but’ from Russia is not good enough.”

Starmer has established a "coalition of the willing," European countries, along with Canada, Australia and New Zealand, backed by Japan, supporting Ukraine and seeking a peaceful and sustainable end to Russia's invasion.

The coalition, Starmer said, has now moved into an operational phase. Representatives of the coalition's militaries will meet in the U.K. on Thursday to "put stronger robust plans in place to swing in behind a peace deal and guarantee Ukraine’s future security.”

On Tuesday, Germany's parliament took the first step toward approving a historic increase in defense spending. With Germany accounting for Europe's largest economy, the debt-conscious country has been under pressure from fellow NATO members to boost its military budget in recent years.

Should the West negotiate an end to Russia's war, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he's not optimistic about having normal relations with Russia when all is said and done.

“What I know is you cannot automatically trust (Putin)," Rutte said. "You have to verify because trust is very far out and very far away and he will only come to a deal at the last minute, we know this with the Russians."
