Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — The Albany City Commission voted unanimously last week to extend its school zone speed safety program with RedSpeed for an additional 10 years and authorized a new 10-year red light safety program at 12 high-risk intersections throughout the city.
Albany first partnered with RedSpeed in August 2021, launching school zone speed enforcement at school campuses throughout the city.
Program data covering January 2024 through June 2025 shows a 96% reduction in speeding violations. During an initial testing period, the program recorded more than 8,000 violations per day across nine enforced school areas. That figure dropped to an average of 333 violations per day during the 2024–2025 school year.
Violations in 2025 are also down 8% compared to the same period in 2024. An average of 90% of drivers who received a citation in 2025 did not receive a second notice of violation.
Albany Chief of Police Michael J. Persley said the program has helped change driver behavior near schools.
“We’ve seen firsthand what consistent awareness can do for driver behavior near our schools,” Persley said. “This extension reflects the confidence the Albany City Commission and our community has placed in this technology and we are proud to continue our partnership with RedSpeed.”
The new red light safety cameras will be placed at 12 intersections identified through a traffic study as high-risk locations for red light violations and related crashes, officials said. The program will begin with a warning period before full enforcement starts, giving drivers time to adjust.
WALB asked for a more detailed timeline, and we are waiting for a response.
City officials said the program will come at no cost to taxpayers. Operational costs will be covered entirely by payments from violators.
