BERRIEN & COOK COUNTIES, Ga. (WALB) - Local fire agencies are stressing fire safety after an early-morning fire in Berrien County was sparked by fireworks.

The Berrien County Fire Department reported that firefighters were paged to a woods fire at around 1:25 a.m. Upon arrival, the homeowner admitted to celebrating with fireworks and initially refused to allow firefighters to put out the blaze.

When firefighters explained the fire had to be extinguished, the homeowner attempted to argue, prompting authorities to notify Berrien Communications and request law enforcement support.

Deputies from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, along with an Enigma Police Department officer, quickly arrived on the scene to ensure everyone’s safety. Firefighters were able to contain the fire before turning the scene over to the Georgia Forestry Commission. Officials say they are grateful the incident was not more serious.

Meanwhile, the Cook County Fire Department and Emergency Management Agency reminded residents of the heightened fire risk due to dry conditions and low humidity. They urged the public to limit burning and exercise caution with fireworks, warning that structures and vehicles are at risk and emphasizing that many fires are preventable.

“Please be safe and think before lighting fireworks,” the Cook County EMA said. “We really don’t want to meet you by your house catching fire.”
