Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Dougherty County is one step closer to unveiling a new black heritage trail. The county contracted a local filmmaker to bring the project to life.

Clennon King is working on a project he calls “The Resistance Trail of Southwest Georgia.” It will document some of the most interesting and unique stories of Black heritage within the region.

“We’re looking at all kinds of aspects. We are not simply looking at civil rights. We are looking at slavery, we are looking at reconstruction, we’re looking at all those things,” said Albany-based filmmaker Clennon L. King.

Once created, the trail will consist of twenty addresses around the city. The trail’s website will include artwork, photos, and even a short film that brings the landmark’s narrative to life. Visitors can pick individual landmarks to visit or go on a fully guided tour of all twenty stops.

“I hopefully, want people to really understand that this is holy ground. You know, I always feel like people in Albany don’t realize how holy this ground is. This is extremely storied and rich land,” continued King.

Clennon King isn’t working on this project alone. His cousin, Paul King, is also an accomplished filmmaker and native to Albany. Clennon King says his cousin actually began his career at WALB.

“And he’s got two Emmys under his belt. He’s no joke. We’re lucky to have him. I’m lucky to have him on my team to get this done for our hometown,” said Clennon King.

During the Government Affairs meeting on Monday afternoon, King provided the county commission with updates on the trail’s progress. The entire commission vocalized how impressed they were with this project.

“If you pull this off for us, I think we will be in an entirely different league. I’ve never seen this kind of work produced in this community before. It is class work,” said Gloria Gaines, Ward 5 Commissioner.

Clennon King’s contract with the county says that this heritage trail must be completed by February 2026, but King says he hopes to complete it before then.
