KANSAS CITY (TNND) — A Kansas City firefighter paramedic has died after the patient he was transporting to the hospital Sunday allegedly stabbed him.
Graham Hoffman, 29, was "critically injured after being stabbed in the chest, piercing his heart," while taking a patient to the hospital on what began as a routine medical call from the police, city officials said.
Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) crews worked to try and save Hoffman's life en route to North Kansas City Hospital and continued lifesaving efforts in the emergency room before Graham was moved into surgery and ultimately succumbed to his injuries, authorities added.
The stabbing took place after police were dispatched to check on a woman who was walking along a section of highway near North Oak Trafficway, The New York Times reported.
Officers found the woman and requested help from emergency medical services for treatment, police reportedly told the outlet. While on the way to the hospital, police said the patient "produced an edged weapon" and stabbed Hoffman.
"At just 29, Graham embodied Kansas City’s finest quality – selfless service for others," Mayor Quinton Lucas said. "That he was taken from us while working to save lives makes this loss all the more painful.”
The Clay County Prosecutor's Office announced charges Sunday against 38-year-old Shanetta Bossell.
Jail records list her as being charged with first-degree murder, resisting/interfering with arrest for a felony and third-degree assault, as well as armed criminal action. Her bond is set at $1 million.
Additionally, Bossell was arrested on April 23 for allegedly biting a Platte City officer and was charged with assault and resisting arrest, according to KCTV 5.
Hoffman had been a Kansas City Fire Department member since 2022.
KCFD said Hoffman was "described as compassionate, caring, loving, and a leader on and off the job by his fellow firefighters and academy classmates."
