WASHINGTON (TNND) — Democratic lawmakers are taking different approaches as the party tries to find an identity. Some continue to aggressively attack the Trump administration and its policies, while others are leaning into the generational shift in hopes of taking back power.
Chris Cooper, a professor of political science at Western Carolina University, told us, as the weeks go on, Democrats continue to struggle with an identity crisis.
So there is a bunch of different sorts of ideas in the Democratic party about how to move forward," said Cooper.
One idea, action and aggressiveness. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker calling out the "Do Nothing Democrats" during a speech in New Hampshire on Sunday, while also trying to rally the troops.
Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now. These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace," Pritzker told the crowd.
Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have also joined forces for their "fighting oligarchy" tour. But their message is causing some infighting after Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) said the party should stop using the term "oligarchy." Sanders responded on "Meet the Press" on Sunday.
I think the American people are not quite as dumb as what Ms. Slotkin thinks they are. I think they understand very well, they are living in an oligarchy," Sanders said.
Meanwhile, Democrats like former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg are leaning into the generational shift. Appearing on more conservative podcasts geared toward younger men, like 'Flagrant' with comedian Andrew Schulz.
Strategies Stephen Farnsworth, a professor of political science at the University of Mary Washington, says, point toward the 2028 presidential election officially being underway.
When you're looking at the Democratic Governor's in particular, they're trying to make more of a name for themselves. They're trying to reshape the vision of the party," said Farnsworth.
On Wednesday, former Vice President Kamala Harris is also expected to criticize President Trump, making her first public remarks since leaving the White House.
