ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - There are only hours left to say goodbye to former President Jimmy Carter in Atlanta before he’s flown to Washington, D.C.

The 39th president of the United States, who died Sunday, Dec. 29, at the age of 100, is getting a final farewell from his home state.

It’s been a family affair for many at The Carter Center, where the former president’s body is lying in repose until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

“I brought my family to celebrate the legacy of President Carter,” said Brian Brodrick, the mayor of Watkinsville.

“This guy is the future. He’s part of our future, and it’s important for our future generation to know the past so that they can effectively lead us in the future,” said Lori, about her son Dorian.

“I got a chance to be here when the library opened back in ’87 as a kid, so it was great to bring my son here at this age and have him witness a moment in history,” said Erica Lee.

“I think the family feels very proud and warm and fuzzy because so many people have come out to pay their respects. It’s been amazing,” said Dr. Meredith Evans, the director of The Carter Presidential Library.

While Carter’s remains will return to Georgia on Thursday, they’ll be in Plains for a private funeral service, so Monday night and Tuesday morning are the final opportunities for people to say goodbye.

“Make time. It’s worth it to come and celebrate the legacy of a man who gave so much and represented our state so well,” said Brodrick.

“Come out. Make the trip. This is the opportunity to say goodbye to a great man, to an American hero, to a Georgian,” said Lori.

The Carter Center will be open to the public for free Thursday.

“You’ll be able to really learn more, and really pay homage, and sign the condolence books,” Evans said. “It’ll be an opportunity to reflect. We will be showing the funeral.”

The last shuttle bus to The Carter Center for Carter’s viewing will leave King Memorial Station at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.
