MELBOURNE, Fla. (CBS12) — Covered in maggot-infested bed sores and suffering from sepsis, dehydration, and dangerously high blood sugar, an 87-year-old Melbourne woman died in what prosecutors described as a slow, agonizing decline — and now her grandson has been convicted of her manslaughter.
A Brevard County jury found Allen G. Arias, 47, guilty on June 17 following seven hours of deliberation in a case that shed light on the grim conditions inside the home he shared with 87-year-old Anita Arias.
The 18th Judicial Circuit of the State Attorney's Office said Anita Arias died in October 2019 from dehydration, emaciation, sepsis, and uncontrolled blood sugar, according to autopsy findings.
Hospital staff at Holmes Regional Medical Center raised alarms after Arias brought his grandmother in for treatment, and medical teams discovered extensive bed sores and insect infestations. Melbourne police later executed a search warrant at the residence on Count Street, finding the woman's bedroom in a filthy condition and medications for diabetes that had not been administered.
Prosecutors said Arias's role as the woman's caregiver, and his responsibility for managing her health despite her mobility challenges and existing diagnosis of diabetes. During the trial, jurors were shown graphic photos of infected wounds and heard testimony on the extent of her decline.

Allen Arias and family members defended his actions, describing Anita Arias as a strong-willed hoarder who routinely rejected food, medicine, and medical care, according to the news release. But Colon pushed back against that narrative in closing arguments.
"It's unfair to say she died the way she lived,” Assistant State Attorney Tiffany Colon said. "Elderly people might be set in their ways, but you still need to do what you need to do to take care of them — or you need to ask for help.”
Aggravated manslaughter of an elderly person is a first-degree felony in Florida, carrying a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. A judge scheduled sentencing for August 20. Arias remains in custody at the Brevard County Jail.
“Ultimately, I’m happy the victim finally got justice, even though she wasn’t here to see it,” Colon said after the verdict.
