Description
SOUTH GEORGIA (WALB) - A statewide program in Georgia is helping foster children find permanent homes.
Georgia’s Teens After Guardianship (TAG) program serves youth ages 13-18 who’ve been adopted or placed under guardianship.
TAG provides career prep, education funding, housing assistance, mentorship, and life skills training to help teens succeed after care.
The program currently operates in 10 cities across Georgia, with efforts underway to expand in South Georgia.
Robin Storey, adoptive mom, has adopted five children through foster care and now mentors other families considering adoption.
“People think adoption has to be this huge, complicated thing, but for us, it was about opening our home and our hearts. These kids just needed someone to say yes,” she said.
The average timeframe from when children go into foster care to when they are adopted is about 30 months.
Statistics from An Open Door Adoption Agency showed that over 1,200 children find permanent homes yearly.
Right now, over 11,000 children across the state are in foster care, and about 3,000 are still waiting for permanent families.
In later newcasts, WALB’s Taylor Lewis will speak with TAG program representatives to explain the benefits for adopted and guardianship youth in South Georgia.
