(WGXA) — Ballots are being cast across the state as early voting has begun. Every county will have the public service commission on its ballot, but may have different things like mayor, city council, or a SPLOST.

YT Bell with the Southern Poverty Law Center expressed that this election is a big one because it impacts so many areas of day-to-day life.

"Utility bills, affordability, cost of living, crime, voting, education, healthcare, all of that is on the ballot", said Bell.

As for the PSC, which is in charge of keeping the price of electricity and natural gas affordable for Georgians.

Georgians will be voting for a republican or a democrat in districts 2 and 3. They are elected every 6 years and serve staggered terms.

According to Bell, utility bills have increased 6 times in the last 3 years. She says it's important to get out and vote on the PSC if your bills are concerning.

"If you care about you know your bill is too high. You want to know why your light bill is too high? Then you need to show up and vote your values on or before November 4th for the public service commission, but please do your research," said Bell.

The last PSC election was in 2020; however, only nearly half of Georgians got out to vote for the PSC. The election before that was 2016, and the number of voters for the entire state was about 3.6 million, when the population of the state was nearly 3 times that.

Bell encourages people to spread the word about the election to ensure Georgia is left in good hands in the coming years.

"We're voting not just for today but for the future and those that you love and care about, so make sure you hold your family members, your friends, your neighbors, and your coworkers accountable and remind them to vote", said Bell.
