Georgia Senators launch inquiry into military moving delays

Description

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -Both of Georgia’s senators are raising concerns over problems with military moves at installations across the country, including Fort Stewart.

Some military families have waited weeks for their household items after the federal government overhauled the military moving system.

The federal government granted the Global Household Goods Contract, known as GHC, to HomeSafe Alliance, putting the company in charge of all military moves.

Since then, military families have reported missed pick-ups, delayed moving timelines, and poor communication. Our WTOC Investigates team reported on this issue last month.

Now, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Georgia) and Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Georgia) have launched an inquiry with U.S. Transportation Command, the branch of the Defense Department responsible for moving logistics. They’re asking for the reasons for the delays.

“These issues have affected Georgians transferring to new duty stations, adding frustration and, at times, financial uncertainty to an already disruptive relocation process. We urge you to fully exercise your oversight authority to ensure the GHC program delivers on its promise to improve service, communication, and accountability for military families,” the letter to U.S. Transportation Command reads.

The senators have requested an answer to their inquiry by March 31st.

HomeSafe Alliance provided this statement to WTOC:

HomeSafe Alliance is modernizing and digitizing the relocation experience for military members and their families through the new Global Household Goods Contract (GHC). In these early, developmental stages of the GHC program, there have been some delays related to the capacity of our service provider network.Over the last month, HomeSafe Alliance has made significant progress in strengthening our network, and we continue to pursue every available option for growing our capacity. We sincerely apologize to every family affected by delays, and we are working with U.S. Transportation Command to resolve issues and maintain a conditions-based phase-in of the new program.
