CANADA (TNND) — The G7 has now become the G6 after President Donald Trump left the summit early on Monday, leaving leaders to hold bilateral talks on the final day with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about Russia's relentless war on the country.
The annual meeting of the Group of 7 nations includes Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, focusing on finding common ground on critical international challenges.
Trump departed the summit in the Canadian Rocky Mountain resort of Kananaskis, stating: "I have to be back, very important" due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
Before leaving, the president declared that Tehran should be evacuated "immediately," adding "Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign."
He also joined other leaders in signing a statement saying Iran can never have a nuclear weapon, and calling for a “de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza.”
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on the way back to Washington, “We did everything I had to do at the G7."
With talks on ending the war in Ukraine at an impasse, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain and other G7 members were slapping new tariffs on Russia in a bid to get it to the ceasefire negotiating table.
Trump declined to join in the sanctions on Russia, saying he would wait until Europe did so first.
“When I sanction a country, that costs the U.S. a lot of money, a tremendous amount of money,” he said.
Trump had been scheduled before his departure to meet with Zelenskyy and with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
He also announced with Starmer that they had finalized the U.K.-U.S. trade deal agreed by the two leaders last month.
Both leaders went before the press to share that they have signed the agreement with Trump, saying it is a "fair" deal for both nations.
The U.K. is very well protected. You know why? Because I like them, that's why," Trump said alongside Starmer.
On the Middle East, Merz told reporters that Germany was planning to draw up a final communique proposal on the Israel-Iran conflict that will stress that “Iran must under no circumstances be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons-capable material.”
