WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump has instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to scrutinize all actions taken by former President Joe Biden during his time in office, focusing on policy documents signed with an autopen. Trump has also called for an investigation into whether Biden's team concealed any health issues during his presidency.
“Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency. I made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations. Any suggestion that I didn’t is ridiculous and false,” Biden said in a statement after the order was announced. “This is nothing more than a distraction by Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans who are working to push disastrous legislation that would cut essential programs like Medicaid and raise costs on American families, all to pay for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.”
The controversy centers on the legality of using an autopen, a device that replicates a person's signature. A 2005 Justice Department memo confirms it is legal for a president to use an autopen. However, Republicans are questioning whether Biden was aware of its use, citing concerns about his cognitive abilities.
Trump has also been in the spotlight for his own controversial pardons, having granted clemency to over 1,500 individuals, including those convicted of serious crimes such as murder and fraud. His recent pardons include reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley and rapper NBA YoungBoy.
The power to grant pardons is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, allowing presidents to issue reprieves and pardons for federal offenses, except in cases of impeachment. Every president, except William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield, who both died in office, has exercised this power.
