ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Dougherty County Commissioners say they are prioritizing funding for youth programs this summer, but with a shift in focus.
Organizers with the Albany Summer Collective recently met with commissioners, hoping to help connect families with a variety of available summer programs. While commissioners expressed appreciation for the collaboration, they announced that all available funding will instead go toward expanding the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office Summer Youth Camp.
The camp will grow from serving 150 participants to 350 children this year.
The decision comes just one week after Albany State University announced it would cut its long-running National Youth Sports Program, leaving many families searching for alternative options.
Parents and community leaders say that program has historically provided free meals, supervision, and educational activities—resources many families rely on during the summer months.
In a statement, the Board of Commissioners said, “Dougherty County remains committed to working with community partners to expand opportunities for youth and families and will continue to explore collaborative efforts moving forward.”
The Sheriff’s Youth Camp is scheduled to run from June 1 through June 30 for children ages 7 to 14. Families have until May 18 to register.
