Description
GEORGIA (WALB) - The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam notice circulating in the mail that claims to be from a court regarding a “traffic violation” and urges people to scan a QR code or make immediate payment.
According to the sheriff’s office, the notice is not legitimate. Officials say courts do not collect fines through QR codes, and they do not threaten immediate enforcement through a mailed notice in this way. The message is designed to pressure people into paying quickly before verifying the claim.
What to do if you receive one
- Do not scan the QR code
- Do not send any money
- If you’re concerned about a ticket or court matter, contact the court directly using a verified phone number (not the number listed on the paper)
The sheriff’s office says a good rule of thumb is: if a “court notice” pressures you to act fast and pay through a QR code, it’s a scam.
