According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the wipes were recalled because they “may be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli.”

Burkholderia cepacia complex is defined as a group of bacteria commonly found in soil and water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Burkholderia gladioli is a rare, gram-negative rod that was initially regarded as a plant pathogen and has been reported as the primary pathogen causing pneumonia in organ transplant recipients and in patients with cystic fibrosis, according to the National Library of Medicine.

This all comes after customers sent in complaints about product discoloration and symptoms such as skin irritation, eye irritation and infections potentially associated with the use of the product.

“Use of products contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli may result in serious and life-threatening infections."

Infants and young children are the primary users of the product, and because of their weak immune systems, they are more likely to contract infections from the wipes. The FDA advised that infections in this group are more likely to spread into the bloodstream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia.

Healthy individuals outside the younger age group who use the wipes are more likely to be exposed to local infections than to extreme ones that the younger age group could experience.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products and return them to any Target store for a full refund.”

Customers with concerns can contact Target Guest Relations at 1-800-440-0680 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET daily for more information.
