Description

DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) — A Douglas woman was arrested Wednesday, June 3, afternoon after police said she intentionally rammed another vehicle twice during a road rage incident near the intersection of Shirley Avenue and West College Avenue.

Amanda Marie Edge, 39, was charged with aggravated assault following the incident that occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to the Douglas Police Department (DPD) incident report, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision that had escalated into a fight. Upon arrival, Officer Lawton Thomas reportedly observed a gold Dodge Ram truck had been hit from behind by a white GMC Sierra driven by Edge.

The incident

The victim told police he had stopped in the roadway to speak with a Unison Behavioral Health employee on the sidewalk about locating his relative, who was a patient at the facility.

The victim said Edge pulled up behind him and began honking her horn because he was blocking traffic, according to DPD. The victim said he yelled at her to hold on, and Edge then intentionally rammed the rear of his truck with her vehicle. The victim said Edge continued to accelerate her vehicle in an attempt to push his vehicle out of the way.

A witness told police she heard a loud noise that sounded like tires screeching on pavement. The witness said she saw Edge back up and ram the truck a second time.

Another witness told police that the victim told Edge to go around him, and Edge became angry and started yelling at the victim. The witness said Edge rammed into the back of the victims’ truck and pushed him several feet. The witness said Edge then put her truck in reverse, backed up and rammed him again from behind, continuing to accelerate and pushing the Dodge Ram truck even further.

A witness who was in traffic behind Edge recorded video of the incident, which was uploaded to evidence.

Suspect statements

When questioned by police, Edge said she pulled up behind the Dodge Ram truck who was parked in the middle of the road. Edge said she honked her horn and the victim started yelling at her.

Edge told police she was off her medication and stated the doctor wouldn’t give her the medication she takes for homicidal thoughts. Edge said she hit the Dodge Ram truck and continued accelerating, causing her tires to screech on the pavement. When asked if she was currently having homicidal thoughts toward the driver of the Dodge Ram, Edge said she has homicidal thoughts in general.

Edge told police she recently lost her job and insurance and has been unable to afford her medication. Edge said she has been spiraling in the past few weeks due to being off her medication, according to the DPD incident report.

Edge later told police she was blacking out after she honked her horn and the Dodge Ram driver started yelling at her. Edge said the victim got out of his truck to confront her, and she was blacking out and spiraling.

Arrest and evidence

Officer Thomas placed Edge under arrest for aggravated assault. Edge was searched and placed in the patrol vehicle, DPD said.

Police photographed the collision scene and observed a drag mark on the pavement visually estimated to be between 15 and 20 feet long. The drag marks appeared to be fresh and led to the position of the tires on the GMC truck Edge was driving.

Police said the victim was observed with what appeared to be a busted lip and requested EMS.

Edge was transported to the Law Enforcement Center and placed on a 48-hour hold. Medical staff conducted an initial interview before Edge was accepted into jail. A judge approved the warrant request and Edge was served with the warrant.

Officials confirmed Thursday, June 4, that Edge is now out of the jail.
