ATLANTA, Ga. (WGXA) — It’s a WGXA News exclusive. The late rapper Rich Homie Quan, who once performed in Macon at the Macon Arts Center and the Macon Centreplex, now has a new exhibit honoring his legacy in Atlanta.
WGXA’s Carlos Stephens traveled to Atlanta and spoke with the rapper’s family, who shared their emotional reactions to seeing his life and career memorialized.
“I’m ecstatic — sad that it has to be this way — but grateful for him to be acknowledged,” Corey Lamar said.
Rich Homie Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, passed away last September. A year later, his family visited The Trap Music Museum in Atlanta to see the new exhibit dedicated to the award-winning artist.
Over the weekend, fans and family celebrated Quan’s life through a multi-city museum tour and a hometown weekend of events highlighting his lasting influence on music and culture.
Rich Homie Quan rose to fame with chart-topping singles including “Type of Way,” “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” which went double platinum, and “Lifestyle” with Rich Gang.
Jonathan Sims, who managed the rapper’s marketing, reflected on their time working together. “Unforgettable moments — I remember we went to the Rose Bowl, Type of Way was their song. Going to 106 & Park I have a lot of memories with Quan. He was a very, very humble guy.”
Sims says Quan’s father, Corey Lamar, asked him to help plan his son’s birthday and assist with the late artist’s most recent album release, Legacy of Hits. He added that the City of Atlanta also recognized Quan’s legacy.
“The city came out and gave him three different proclamations — we had Rich Homie Quan Day, Rich in Spirit Day — and he received another proclamation from the city as well.”
While the family is deeply grateful for the celebration, Lamar says the loss still feels immense. “It’s a feeling I don’t wish on any other parent,” he said. “Not only my son, but my best friend — not only my best friend, but my business partner. We had a great relationship, father and son. Quan didn’t make moves without me, and I didn’t make moves without him.”
Lamar also spoke candidly about his son’s mental health struggles, encouraging others to seek help when they need it. “A lot of men carry a lot of things as Black men, and if you don’t get help — if you don’t raise your hand and acknowledge you have a problem — this can lead to death. My son was in a dark space.”
Now, Lamar says he is committed to keeping his son’s legacy alive — not through fame or fortune, but through giving back. He says the family recently donated a scholarship in Rich Homie Quan’s honor to his former school.
Another close friend of the rapper also shared how they plan to continue honoring him. “The most we can do now is take care of the kids, make sure the parents are taken care of, and every day just keep putting in the grind.”
