Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Albany Police Department (APD) is asking anyone with information about the Saturday shooting at Albany State University to come forward.

Local and state law enforcement have not announced any arrests in the shooting that left 5 people shot and 19-year-old De’Morion Tayshawn Daniels dead, who was not an ASU student.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) says the other victims were all females. Their ages were 13, 16, 17, and 20 years old, and another 19-year-old was injured but not shot.

We’re working to learn if the 19 and 20-year-olds are students at Albany State.

There are still a lot of other unanswered questions that people are asking:

  • How many people were questioned on Saturday?
  • Are there any persons of interest?
  • What are campus safety protocols today?
  • Will ASU make any security changes moving forward?

WALB has asked ASU officials all of these questions but they have declined an interview and are refusing to answer any of our questions.

Albany Police Chief Michael Persley did release a statement urging anyone who knows something to come forward with information.

Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler says, “It’s sad because we want Albany to be a safe place that people love to come. We don’t want them to have this bad image that something is always going to happen when you go to Albany. But the mindset of the people just gotta change, especially young people. I’m just praying for the students and the ones that might be affected by this tragedy and also the instructors of the ones at Albany State but Albany is a Good Life City.”

A lot of people who were at homecoming are also still sharing their reactions on social media, and are saying this incident does not reflect Albany State University.

Dougherty County School System also released a statement following the incident:

First and foremost, our hearts go out to all those injured and the family of the young man who was killed. We are deeply saddened by this tragic event. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected during this time.

Among those injured during this weekend’s tragic shooting were several DCSS students. We are extremely grateful that these students survived the incident. Fortunately, they are doing well physically, and we are hopeful they will recover fully.

We are also aware that these and other DCSS students present during the incident may be dealing with mental and emotional trauma related to the shooting. As a result, the DCSS is offering mental health counseling services as support for those students struggling to cope with Saturday’s tragedy.

We encourage parents who have children struggling to cope with the events of this weekend, or any other issue, to contact their school to arrange for support from licensed mental health professionals.

We will continue to keep you updated on air and online as we learn more.
