WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court race is capturing national attention as a potential indicator of broader political sentiment, with significant implications for state and national issues.
The race's outcome is also seen as a reflection of voter sentiment towards President Trump's presidency and the Democratic party's standing following their 2024 defeat.
On Tuesday, Brad Schimel, backed by former President Trump, faces off against liberal Susan Crawford, endorsed by former President Obama. The candidates are not running under the umbrella of political parties so the race is instead categorized as Conservative vs. Liberal.
The outcome will determine the majority on the court, influencing decisions with significant state and national ramifications. At the state level, abortion rights and voting rights are on the table.
At the national level, the race could impact who controls Congress. The Wisconsin Supreme Court's ruling on redistricting has the power to upset the GOP's super slim majority.
If Republicans lose control of the House they also lose the power to advance President Trump's agenda through Congress.
The stakes have turned this into the most expensive state judge race ever, with both sides expected to spend over $100 million.
"We need to get everybody out to vote for Brad Schimel on Tuesday, the reason is we want to keep Wisconsin, Wisconsin," said Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis.
"The biggest problem with the special elections is that a great majority of people that are very good citizens, they're responsible people, they just don't know there's an election. And so a lot of times, it hinges on who's the most motivated to get out," explained Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb.
To improve voter turnout, Elon Musk held a rally in Wisconsin over the weekend where he gave out two $1 million checks to supporters. Musk, and organizations connected to him, have reportedly spent $20 million on the Wisconsin race.
While Musk says control of Congress is his biggest concern, his company, Tesla, also has a significant case making its way through the state's legal system.
Meanwhile, progressive activist and donor George Soros has contributed $2 million to support Crawford.
