GEORGIA (WALB) - Georgia drivers are noticing gas prices peak this week as severe winter weather disrupts energy production across the nation. The state average climbed six cents to $2.86 per gallon on Monday, and experts warn that prices could continue shifting in the coming days.
If you filled up last week, you’re paying more now. Here’s how Georgia’s current pump prices stack up:
- 6 cents higher than last week
- The same as a month ago
- 26 cents lower than this time last year
For drivers filling up a standard 15-gallon tank, that translates to roughly $42.90—a modest increase that adds up over multiple fill-ups.
Why Are Prices Rising?
The main cause of the rise in prices is the severe winter weather the state has been facing recently. “Colder weather has pushed fuel costs up, leading to slightly higher gas prices across the state even though demand hasn’t changed,” explains Montrae Waiters, spokesperson for AAA–The Auto Club Group.

While fewer drivers are on the road due to hazardous conditions, crude oil prices remain elevated in the high-$50 to low-$60 range. The seasonal trend typically sees demand spike in late February and March when temperatures warm and spring break travelers hit the highways—so prices may not stay stable for long.
Where You’ll Pay the Most and Least
Not all Georgia gas prices are created equal. If you’re in Atlanta, you’re looking at $2.70 per gallon—below the state average.
Pricier markets:
- Hinesville-Fort Stewart: $2.80
- Savannah: $2.79
- Brunswick: $2.73
Best deals:
- Columbus: $2.66
- Catoosa-Dade-Walker: $2.60
- Rome: $2.57
The difference between the cheapest and most expensive markets is nearly 30 cents per gallon—a significant variance that’s worth shopping around for.
The National Picture
Georgia isn’t alone in seeing price increases. The national average climbed four cents to $2.86 per gallon as winter weather swept across much of the country. Despite the uptick, gas prices remain relatively affordable compared to recent years. One year ago, drivers were paying $3.12 nationally and $2.96 in Georgia—a reminder of how much prices can fluctuate.
A Silver Lining for EV Drivers
For those driving electric vehicles, there’s good news: charging costs held steady at 38 cents per kilowatt-hour nationally. EV owners can plan their routes and charging stops using AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner.
Smart Strategies to Save
With prices on the rise, here are practical ways to offset costs:
At the Pump:
- Shop around using AAA’s Fuel Price Finder to compare local prices
- Pay in cash when possible—some retailers charge extra for credit card transactions
- Enroll in fuel savings programs to lock in discounts
On the Road:
- Maintain your vehicle for optimal fuel economy
- Combine errands to minimize driving time
- Keep speeds moderate—fuel economy drops significantly above 50 mph
- Avoid aggressive driving and rapid acceleration
As winter weather keeps hazardous conditions on the roads, AAA reminds drivers: if you see a disabled vehicle, slow down and move over. It’s the safest choice for everyone on the road.
