PEARSON, Ga. (WALB) — Atkinson County school leaders are reviewing video and working with neighboring districts after a fight broke out among fans during a high school basketball game over the weekend.

According to a statement from Atkinson County High School, the altercation happened during halftime of the Atkinson County vs. Clinch County basketball game. Officials say swift action was taken by the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office, Atkinson County School Resource Officers, and school staff to restore order and ensure safety.

As a precaution, the gymnasium was cleared of all spectators, and the game later resumed safely. School officials say no injuries were reported.

“Atkinson County Schools does not tolerate inappropriate or disruptive behavior from spectators or athletes,” the statement reads. “Actions that compromise the safety and integrity of our events will be addressed swiftly and seriously.”

Officials say they are actively reviewing video footage from the incident. Criminal charges may be pursued if warranted, and any disciplinary action will follow school system policies and athletic guidelines.

The district also confirmed it is working closely with the Clinch County School District to gather accurate information related to the incident.

School leaders emphasized that athletic events are intended to be positive, family-friendly environments and reiterated that the safety and well-being of students, staff, athletes, and the community remain a top priority.

At this time, officials say no additional information is available as the review continues.
