ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said he expects several property damage reports in the coming weeks.

Chief Persley said “on New Year’s Eve night, there was a whole lot of gunfire,” attributing the increase to celebratory gunfire.

WALB has not been made aware of any celebratory gunfire injuries in Albany as of Jan. 5.

“Based on how things have been in the past, I’m sure there is some [property] damage somewhere,” Persley said.

While it may be hard to find the person responsible, Chief said he recommends filing a report for insurance purposes.

“Call us and make a report. We probably don’t know who did it, but your property needs to be repaired... You can use that information to contact your insurance company so you can get it repaired.”

Nationally, the dangers of celebratory gunfire are evident. A 10-year-old from Miami died as a result of celebratory gunfire on New Year’s Day in 2025.

A Tallahassee man was also arrested Monday, Jan. 5, 2026 for firing nearly 60 rounds into the air on New Year’s Day.

In Georgia, celebratory gunfire is illegal. Violators can face a range of charges including reckless or negligent discharge of a firearm; battery; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; or Manslaughter/murder.
