DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) — A Coffee County family already featured by WALB after devastating flooding says they are now facing another difficult reality — their flood insurance will not come close to covering the cost of replacing their home.
Alexis and Galen Griffis say they lost nearly everything when floodwaters overtook their home off Sand Hill Church Road earlier this month. The couple, who have an 18-month-old daughter and are expecting another baby girl in November, are currently staying with relatives while trying to determine their next steps.
According to a recently launched GoFundMe, the family carried flood insurance, but the payout is expected to fall well short of what is needed to repair or replace the home.

“Their home was destroyed, and although they had flood insurance, it was nowhere near enough to cover the cost of repairs or replacement,” the fundraiser states.
The family says they are currently displaced and relying on relatives for temporary housing while they work to rebuild. The fundraiser was created to help the family secure a new home and provide stability for their growing family.
The family’s story has sparked an outpouring of support online, with community members donating and sharing the fundraiser in hopes of helping them recover from the disaster.
With another baby due in just a few months, the Griffis family says they are focused on finding a permanent place to call home and rebuilding after losing nearly everything.
WALB has reached out to the family for an interview and is working to learn more about the challenges flood victims face when insurance coverage falls short after a disaster.
