ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Albany police are investigating a string of copper thefts targeting air conditioning units at homes and businesses across the city.

During June 29’s briefing, Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said investigators are working multiple cases involving suspects stealing copper components from air conditioning units.

Reported theft locations include Phoebe Neurosurgery at 2622 Meredyth Drive, a residence in the 1300 block of Dawson Road and two businesses in the 100 block of North Slappey Boulevard.

Phoebe Health Systems said four out of five air conditioning units were impacted at their Neurosurgery building. A spokesperson said that while frustrating and costly, the theft did not alter any patient appointments or impact staff’s workday. Phoebe said their units have since been replaced.

Persley said police previously arrested one person in connection with a copper theft investigation. However, investigators determined there was not enough evidence to link that individual to the broader series of thefts.

Police have not released information about potential suspects or whether the incidents are connected.
