ATLANTA, Ga. — Newly released police body camera video shows officers rescue a trapped man after an explosion that nearly destroyed an apartment building in Atlanta last week.
Fire officials said the explosion happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Northside Plaza apartment complex, located on Markham Street, across the street from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The explosion resulted in one man being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition and 19 families being displaced, according to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.
On Monday, Atlanta police released bodycam video that shows officers rush to the badly damaged building soon after the explosion.
“Officers moved quickly to check for injured persons as a strong odor of gas remained in the area,” Atlanta police said in a statement Monday. “They heard yelling from the building, indicating someone was still trapped inside the rubble.”
Officers immediately requested help from Atlanta Fire Rescue and Grady EMS.
The video shows officers finding a man trapped in a wedge between stairwells and pulling him down to safety. He suffered several burns, according to police.
Police said officers stayed with the man until Grady EMS arrived. It’s unclear if the man in the video was the one who was hospitalized.
The building that exploded was vacant and under renovation, according to Integral Property Management, the building’s management company.
The blast happened “during an act of vandalism involving copper theft,” when an open flame ignited gas that had filled the apartment, according to the company.
Atlanta fire investigators, federal investigators and Atlanta Gas Light are still investigating the cause of the explosion.
The management company also disputed that the explosion displaced residents.
The building that exploded was vacant “for some time” because it’s “part of an ongoing, orderly redevelopment of the property,” according to the company.
