Description
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The Valdosta Alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is raising money to address a global challenge in higher education.
For the last 12 years, the group has held a golf tournament to raise money for scholarships. The scholarships will benefit high school students in surrounding counties.
The goal is to mentor young men by showing their potential and talent within our community.
“What we are fortunate to do is to make sure they can have things to help them with the little things you can think about when you go to college,” Byron Williams, Valdosta Alumni Chapter President, said.
“I cannot say where I would be at if I did not have that type of mentorship and financial assistance,” Jylon Bennett, 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient, said.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, only 36% of Black male students completed a bachelor’s degree within six years, while white males graduated at a rate of 63% in six years.
At the end of the 2024-2025 school year, the fraternity will award $500 scholarships to 25 students for college.
