Description
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - A woman has been hospitalized following claims she swallowed explosives Thursday morning at the Valdosta Regional Airport, according to Valdosta police.
Around 6:20 a.m., VPD responded to the airport after a 33-year-old woman claimed she had “ingested multiple explosive devices,” according to a police statement.
After detectives and crisis negotiators got to the scene and made contact with the woman, they determined that she seemed to be in “severe emotional distress.”
The area was cleared and back to normal by around 11 a.m., according to VPD. Flights in and out of the airport were not interrupted.
Because of the threat, multiple agencies were contacted including the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Georgia State Patrol, Moody Air Force Base, and Georgia Bureau of Investigations.
The woman was reportedly taken to a local hospital.
“We appreciate the rapid response and assistance by all the agencies mentioned above, along with the Valdosta Fire Department and South Georgia Medical Center Emergency Medical Services,” said Chief Leslie Manahan. “This is a great example of how organizations will work together to ensure that we keep our community safe.”
Police detectives are still looking into the case in regard to possible criminal prosecution.
