SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Eight members of Utah’s American Red Cross disaster team have been deployed to communities in the Midwest and Southern U.S., which have been ravaged by deadly flooding and tornadoes.

The volunteers, residents of Draper, North Ogden, West Point, Hyde Park, South Jordan, Salt Lake City, and Sandy, will assist in storm-impacted areas in Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and Arkansas. According to CBS, at least 20 people have died due to the severe weather in these states.

While rainfall has decreased in recent days, the threat of flooding persists, as nearly 70 rivers have reached or are expected to reach “major flood stage” this week. This could endanger homes, roadways, and critical infrastructure. The National Weather Service has issued warnings of “catastrophic flooding” in these already affected areas. The region is also bracing for additional severe storms, with 90 tornadoes reported from Kansas to Ohio, and more possible in the coming days.

Currently, the Red Cross has nearly 800 trained disaster workers deployed across the affected regions, including 30 specialized emergency shelter teams and about 80 emergency response vehicles that are in action or on standby.

Red Cross teams are providing shelter, meals, and emergency supplies to those impacted by the disaster, with plans to continue their support in the days ahead.
