(Gray News) – Actor Jay North, known for playing the titular character in the iconic “Dennis the Menace” TV show, has died at age 73, according to reports.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Jeannie Russell, who played Margaret Wade on his show. She told them North died at his home in Lake Butler, Florida on Sunday.

The actor had reportedly been battling colon cancer for years before his death.
North led the show on the CBS comedy during its run from 1959-1963.
The show was based on the “Dennis the Menace” comic strip created by cartoonist Hank Ketchum.
The show revolved around the shenanigans of Dennis, the only child of Henry, played by Herbert Anderson, and Alice, played by Gloria Henry.
Despite being well-intentioned, the chaotic Dennis would get on the nerves of his neighbor George Wilson, and then his brother John Wilson.

North had been 6 years old when he auditioned for the role of Dennis, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 8 years old when the show first aired and 12 years old when it was canceled after four seasons.
North’s iconic role was not his first, as the child star showcased his talents in guest appearances in shows like “Wanted: Dead or Alive,” “77 Sunset Strip,” and “Sugarfoot,” among others.
He also appeared in commercials for the show’s sponsors.
