VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - This year for the annual Day of Caring, Greater Valdosta United Way is focusing on hunger relief efforts by partnering with Second Harvest of South Georgia.

Friday, October 18, over 100 volunteers are packing 4,000 boxes which is about 30,000 meals for families and individuals across South Georgia that are still seeing the impacts of Hurricane Helene.

Lee Smothers, Southeast Capital Raymond James Volunteer said, “We just want to do what we can to give back to Valdosta. We have a close-knit community and coming together is something that is important to our firm and our community as a whole.”

“It’s just about giving to the community that you are in, that you live in, that you love, it take every single one of us to make this community what it is and we love Lowndes County,” Jennifer Price, United Way Board Member said.

That’s the one thing that United Way Worldwide president and chief executive officer Angela Williams saw when she came to Valdosta.

She said, “Neighbors are helping neighbors so even in this warehouse today packing food are people that were impacted by Hurricane Helene, they still want to come together.”

Williams met with state and city leaders, along with partner agencies of Greater Valdosta United Way to develop a strategy for recovery across the impacted areas.

“We are the ones who also make sure through our partner agencies we are able to bring what is needed to ensure that there is not only short term recovery but mid and long term recovery as well. United way it committed to being here for the long hall,” Williams said.

Each of the boxes packed together will support families from South Georgia all the way to North Carolina.
