VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) —The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) is investigating the deaths of two inmates at Valdosta State Prison, with official causes of death still undetermined.
Antavious Bailey died Sunday, June 21, according to the GDC. His body was turned over to the county coroner and is expected to be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
The case is also being investigated by the GDC Office of Professional Standards, which the agency says is standard procedure. Additional details were not released because the investigation is ongoing.
Bailey was convicted in DeKalb County of kidnapping, armed robbery and home invasion. GDC said he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with a maximum release date of 2039.
A second inmate, Steven Bryant, died Tuesday, June 23. GDC said the cause of death is also undetermined, but the agency reported there were no reports of an altercation and no signs of foul play.
As with Bailey’s death, Bryant’s body was turned over to the county coroner and is expected to be transported to the GBI crime lab to determine the official cause of death. The GDC Office of Professional Standards is investigating, and officials said no additional details are available at this time.
Bryant was convicted in Floyd County of aggravated sexual battery and was sentenced to life without parole.
