Description
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) — On Friday, June 26, Valdosta Police Department made a social media post addressing social media posts circulating about possible “takeover” events occurring in the city over the weekend.
The statement says, “The department does not condone, support, or authorize any takeover event, or any unsanctioned gathering, that threatens public safety, disrupts businesses, damages property, or violates state laws or local ordinances.”
Valdosta Police added in the post that anyone involved in criminal activity, or found to be involved in promoting criminal activity, will be subject to action taken by law enforcement.
According to recent reports, “teen takeovers” are unauthorized, large-scale social media meetups of youths that have disrupted popular city hubs. In Georgia, the incidents have involved violence, gunfire, and dozens of arrests in Atlanta causing law enforcement, city officials, and private venues to launch strict crackdowns.
VPD is encouraging parents to know where their children are, and to take appropriate steps to ensure they are not participating in these types of events, as well as discussing the legal and safety consequences of participating in these events.
We ask that members of our community enjoy the area responsibly and allow businesses and families to do the same.
Anyone with information about planned criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Valdosta Police Department or submit and anonymous tip to 229-293-3091 or online at www.valdostacity.com/police-department.
