WASHINGTON (TNND) — President-elect Donald Trump used a series of Christmas Day messages to advocate for the United States to expand territory and influence throughout the world. He also continued to try and troll some allies.

He started by posting on Truth Social about the Panama Canal saying “Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal." It was an extension of his ongoing gripe.

“The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, highly unfair this complete rip off of our country will immediately stop," Trump said over the weekend.

Panama’s President, José Raúl Mulino, has insisted the canal will remain under Panamanian control.

“That is a manifestation of gross ignorance of history," he said when addressing Trump's repeated comments.

Trump’s threats could be viewed as trying to disrupt China’s growing global influence but some Democrats think he’s going about it wrong.

“We have a treaty with Panama, we have a free trade agreement with Panama, we are no more going to take back the Panama Canal than Panama is gonna come in and try to take the Mississippi River from us," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida.

Trump also suggested the U.S. acquire Greenland for national security reasons. His allies say he’s on to something.

“When you talk about securing our nation, that is where Greenland comes into the conversation and being strategic and how we’re going to keep this nation safe," said Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee.

Trump's posts also zeroed in on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, again calling him “Governor” and saying Canadian taxes would be cut by more than 60% if they were America’s 51st state.

He ended his troll by urging Canadian hockey great Wayne Gretzky to run for Canadian Prime Minister. Trump also named his ambassador to Panama in the middle of his Christmas Day posts. Miami Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera will likely have to navigate the incoming president’s ongoing issues with the way the canal operates.
