Description

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have agreed to a prisoner swap just one day after Trump said the Russian president "has gone absolutely CRAZY" for launching what he called the largest aerial attack of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The news was confirmed after a meeting in Moscow between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, NBC News reported.

"We appreciate the opportunities provided by the Republic of Türkiye for holding the next stage of direct negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations," Lavrov wrote about the meeting on X.

Lavrov reportedly praised Trump as "a man who wants results" during the event in Turkey, adding that the prisoner swap was agreed upon amid negotiations over the end of the war. He also accused European nations of attempting to "sabotage" Trump's efforts.

Details about the exchange were not immediately released and the White House has not commented on the development.

It will be the first prisoner swap with Russia since a Russian-American ballerina, Ksenia Karelina, was freed in April in exchange for Russian national Arthur Petrov.

Karelina was convicted in August 2024 and sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges stemming from a donation of about $52 to a charity aiding Ukraine.

The announcement follows a “1,000 for 1,000” prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine that happened after the first direct peace talks since the early weeks of Moscow's 2022 invasion.

"303 Ukrainian defenders are home. The third part of the 1000-for-1000 exchange deal, agreed upon in Türkiye, has been completed," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday.

Over the weekend, Russia launched overnight attacks in Ukraine, with officials saying the strikes killed at least 29 people and injured dozens over the three days.
