Description

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet Monday to discuss tariffs, efforts to return hostages from Gaza, Israeli-Turkish relations, the Iranian threat and the battle against the International Criminal Court, according to Netanyahu's office.

"The PM appreciates the personal and warm ties with President Trump and thanks him for the invitation to be the first leader to meet with him following the imposition of global tariffs," a release stated. Israel faces a 17% tariff.

The visit is Netanyahu's second since Trump was inaugurated in January.

On Thursday, Trump told reporters on Air Force One he’d spoken with Netanyahu earlier that morning saying the visit could come as early as next week.

"I think he's going to be coming to our country sometime in the not-too-distant future,” said Trump. “We'll speak about Israel, we'll speak about what's going on. That's another thing we like to get solved. I think we will get it solved. But, I think he very well may be coming."

Since relaunching its war against Hamas and breaking a ceasefire last month, Israel now controls more than 50% of the territory in Gaza.

The largest contiguous area the army controls is around the Gaza border, where the military has razed Palestinian homes, farmland and infrastructure to the point of uninhabitability, according to Israeli soldiers and rights groups.

Netanyahu said Israel aims to pressure Hamas to release the remaining 59 hostages, of whom 35 are believed dead.

During the prime minister's last trip to the White House, Trump described his vision for Gaza and said he wants the U.S. to take over and redevelop it after Palestinians are resettled elsewhere.

"We will own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site,” Trump said at the start of a joint news conference with Netanyahu.

More than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza as part of Israel's offensive, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which doesn't say whether those killed are civilians or combatants. Israel says it has killed around 20,000 militants, without providing evidence.
