Description

LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced a scheduled bridge removal that will impact traffic on I-75 next week.

GDOT says this is the last remaining bridge in the county that was built in 1961. The original interchange consisted of twin bridges.

According to a release, the bridge over I-75 at Exit 11 is scheduled to be removed starting on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 9 p.m. and be completed by 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25. This schedule is subject to change depending on the weather conditions.

Traffic on I-75 will be reduced to one right lane and motorists will use the Exit 11 ramps to exit and re-enter the interstate.

GDOT says deputies will direct traffic at the top of the ramps.

The northernmost bridge was removed in 2022 to clear the way for the construction of roundabouts at the ramps. Still to come is the construction of roundabouts at the ramps.

The reconstruction of the interchange to improve operation and enhance safety is currently expected to be completed in late spring 2025. GDOT says to is a $37 million blended federal, state, and Transporation Investment Act (TIA) funded project.
