You'll be able to watch the full Inauguration Day proceedings within this article starting at 9 a.m. EST. A video player will be provided below.

When is Inauguration Day?

Every four years, a president and vice-president takes the oath and are sworn into office during a public ceremony on January 20 at noon local time in front of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

What is the Inauguration Day schedule?

This year, Inauguration Day is also a designated federal holiday in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

A procession to the Capitol will kick off the events.

President Joe Biden, President-elect Trump and their spouses will travel to the White House, escorted by members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. The two presidents will meet and then head inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for the swearing-in ceremonies.

Swearing-in ceremonies: Vance will be sworn in first, followed by Trump. The swearing-in ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. ET.

The chief justice of the Supreme Court will deliver the oath to Trump, who will subsequently give his inaugural address.

After the ceremonies, outgoing President Biden and first lady Jill Biden will leave the Capitol.

The President’s Signing Room Ceremony: Trump will gather with aides and members of Congress in the President’s Room to sign nominations and possibly some memorandums, proclamations or executive orders.

JCCIC Congressional Luncheon: Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, guests and members of the JCCIC will have a luncheon in the Capitol

The President’s Review of the Troops and Presidential Parade: Trump and Vance will make their way to the Capitol where they will review the military troops, who will then lead a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. About 7,500 participants including first responders, veterans groups and school marching bands are expected. First responders from Butler County, Pennsylvania, where Trump survived an assassination attempt, will be among the groups participating.

Oval Office Signing Ceremony at The White House

Trump will then deliver remarks at the Commander in Chief, Liberty Inaugural and Starlight balls, which will conclude the day's events. The Commander in Chief Ball is focused on military service members, a Liberty Inaugural Ball is geared toward Trump supporters that will feature a Village People performance, and the Starlight Ball, is focused on high-dollar donors.

What are the security plans for Inauguration Day?

Security will be exceptionally tight, with 25,000 law enforcement and military personnel stationed in D.C., including the Metropolitan Police Department and nearly 4,000 officers from across the nation.

Officials expect some demonstrations, including the People’s March on Saturday, Jan. 18. District leaders said law enforcement is prepared to handle any disturbances, but no credible threats have been identified by the FBI.

Why are US flags being flown at half-staff on Inauguration Day?

On Dec. 29, 2024 Biden ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff in honor the late President Jimmy Carter, who died last month at 10. It's an honor that indicates that the country or a state is in mourning.

Who will perform at Trump's inauguration events?

Country music star Carrie Underwood will perform “America the Beautiful” is to perform shortly before Trump takes the oath of office at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 20.

The 1970s hitmakers Village People will perform at Trump’s inaugural balls and a rally he’s holding in Washington the day before he’s sworn in.

Other inauguration ceremony performers will include two of the president-elect’s musical favorites, country singer Lee Greenwood and opera singer Christopher Macchio. Greenwood will perform as Trump walks out to take the oath, according to Trump's inaugural committee. Macchio is Trump's choice to perform the National Anthem at the end of the program.

Trump’s other inaugural ceremonies

Inauguration events begin on Saturday, Jan. 18, with a reception and fireworks display at Trump National Sterling, a victory rally at Capitol One Arena, and three inaugural balls, according to the Trump Vance Inaugural Committee.

On Saturday, Trump is scheduled to attend a reception and fireworks display at his Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia. Separately, Vice President-elect JD Vance will attend a reception for the incoming Cabinet members and host a dinner.

On Sunday, the president-elect is to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and then hold a campaign-style "MAGA Victory” rally at Capital One Arena in downtown Washington.

Tuesday, Trump's first full day as the 47th president, will include a National Prayer Service in the morning.
