TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) — The Tifton Police Department (TPD) recognized more than 20 officers, staff and family members with Purple Hearts and other honors for their service and support.

Two of the honors include Purple Heart recipients.

Michael Gaskins and Jerry Fullford were shot while serving a search warrant at a home on Lee Avenue.

Gaskins, Fullford and all of the honored men and women received their recognition on Monday.

The Dec. 5 shooting

Gaskins and Fullford were shot Friday, Dec. 5, while attempting to serve a search warrant. Both officers were in stable condition following the shooting.

The suspect barricaded themselves inside a home near the 800 block of Lee Avenue. Details surrounding the suspect were unknown at the time. The standoff later ended.

A spokesperson with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the GBI was requested by the Tifton Police Department to investigate the officer-involved shooting. The GBI defines an officer-involved shooting as a shooting incident where an officer used their firearm during their duties. Multiple surrounding law enforcement agencies assisted TPD during the standoff.

“Our thoughts and prayers for the two Tifton PD officers who were shot this morning while on a call,” Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough said. “A huge thank you to all the agencies that showed up to help in any way possible to get the suspect shooter arrested and incarcerated without further injury.”

U.S. Congressman Austin Scott posted on Facebook, saying two Tifton police officers were shot in the line of duty and were reported to be in stable condition, according to city officials. He asked for prayers for the recovery of the officers and for the protection of those during the developing situation.
