SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - [UPDATE 9:11 p.m. 7/2/2025] Representative Carl Gilliard has offered his response to the Oglethorpe Mall shooting to WTOC. Here are his remarks:

As the unfortunate events of today’s Mall shooting unfolds it is important that we first allow the professionals (law enforcement) do due diligence in finding out the facts of today’s unfortunate shooting. There must be a collaborative effort in dealing with ongoing violence and our community. a comprehensive plan involving all entities of Savannah ,Chatham and the State of Georgia. This is long overdue. The citizens deserve the right to be able to go out to shop, eat, live and play in their city that they live in. It’s time to come together. Because guns don’t die, people do!

Enough is enough!!

[UPDATE 9:05 p.m. 7/2/2025] State Senator Derek Mallow has released a statement on the events at the Oglethorpe Mall as well, saying “We cannot let such violence define our community.” His full remarks are below:

[UPDATE 9:01 p.m. 7/2/2025] Savannah Alderman Nick Palumbo has released a statement about the Oglethorpe Mall shooting, saying that “this awful incident... does not reflect the best of our community.” See his full statement here:

 [UPDATE 8:40 p.m. 7/2/2025] People coming out of the Oglethorpe Mall have discovered at least one bullet casing in the parking lot.

It is unclear whether this related to this shooting, but it is now also being investigated by police.

[UPDATE 8:18 p.m. 7/2/2025] WTOC is now seeing people start to be released from the Oglethorpe Mall.

[UPDATE 8:12 p.m. 7/2/2025] WTOC has spoken to District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones, who said “I feel confident our police department will identify the person involved,” and that they will bring the person or people who is responsible to justice.

[UPDATE 8:02 p.m. 7/2/2025] S.W.A.T. units are currently clearing the mall and ensuring it is safe for people to leave, according to Savannah Alderman Detric Leggett.

[UPDATE 7:54 p.m. 7/2/2025] Attorney General Chris Carr has provided a statement on the Oglethorpe Mall shooting, saying “The reports out of Savannah are devastating. My office is monitoring the situation closely and we’re in touch with local law enforcement. We stand ready to support them with whatever they need.”

Members of the SPD Forensics team have arrived on the scene.

 [UPDATE 7:51 p.m. 7/2/2025] Per the Savannah Police Department and Chatham Emergency Services, three people have been shot, but their injuries are not life-threatening. Chatham EMS says four people suffered medical emergencies, including one person who is in critical condition. Savannah Alderman Nick Palumbo says it appears a 69-year-old suffered cardiac arrest.

 [UPDATE 7:31 p.m. 7/2/2025] SPD Chief Gunther has confirmed that no arrests have been made at this time.

[UPDATE 7:28 p.m. 7/2/2025] WTOC has spoken to multiple people who are still waiting for their loved ones to come out of the mall.

According to the SPD Chief and Mayor, there is no longer an active threat at the Oglethorpe Mall.

Three people were shot and four people suffered medical incidents, according to Chatham EMS.

[UPDATE 7:12 p.m. 7/2/2025] Police Chief Lenny Gunther has said that this was an altercation between two groups of people and was not a random shooting.

SPD says three people were shot and one person suffered a medical emergency.

[UPDATE 7:04 p.m. 7/2/2025] The Savannah Police Department is reporting that the mall has been evacuated and there is no active threat at this time.

[UPDATE 7:02 p.m. 7/2/2025] WTOC spoke with people who were inside of the mall when the event occurred, who said it sounded like a “countless number of gunshots.”

Four people are currently either in the hospital or on the way to a hospital.

[UPDATE 6:48 p.m. 7/2/2025] The Savannah Police Department has confirmed to WTOC that there are multiple shooting victims. Viewers should avoid the area.

Chatham EMS has confirmed to WTOC that there are five people being treated and five ambulances on the scene.

At least one person is in critical condition, Chatham EMS says. Four victims are currently on the way to the hospital.

[ORIGINAL STORY] A large number of police officers and emergency vehicles are outside the Oglethorpe Mall responding to reports of a shooting.

Firefighters from the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 574 are also responding to the Oglethorpe Mall and call it “an active and dangerous situation.”

They say to avoid the area at all costs.
